There is a version of Sunday night's Serie A fixture at the Ennio Tardini where Genoa win comfortably. They had nearly 58% of the ball, put 12 shots on the frame, and had five on target to Parma's two. Our pre-match read had Genoa as the favorite at 39% — and for long stretches they looked exactly that. The problem was Parma kept scoring.

The home side went ahead just before halftime. José Romero finished off a move that El Bilal Toure helped construct, putting Parma in front in the 38th minute despite having done very little to suggest they'd earned the lead on the night's overall play. That kind of goal — against the run of things, clinical when it mattered — set the tone for everything that followed.

Genoa had already seen Alessandro Marcandalli pick up a yellow in the 44th minute to close out a first half that ended with Parma ahead and Genoa's frustration already visible. Sebastian Otoa had been booked even earlier, in the 14th, and the visitors' discipline was fraying around the edges.

Genoa Hit Back, Then Hit a Wall

The equalizer came in the 70th minute and felt inevitable. Milutin Osmajic converted with Lorenzo Colombo providing the assist, and for a moment it looked like Genoa's patience with the ball would finally pay off in full. They had the possession, they had the corners — five to Parma's two — and they had the momentum.

Ten minutes later, Parma answered. Pontus Almqvist, set up by Nesta Elphege, made it 2-1 in the 80th and cabal, that was the moment the match died as a contest. Genoa had nothing left to throw at it that they hadn't already tried.

The closing minutes were scrappy. Enrico Del Prato was booked for Parma in the 85th, and the final whistle brought two more yellow cards in stoppage time — Mikael Ellertsson for Genoa in the 90+2 and Mariano Troilo for Parma in the 90+3 — which tells you everything about the temperature on the pitch by the end.

The raw numbers make Parma's win look like a smash-and-grab:

  • Shots: Parma 5, Genoa 12
  • Shots on target: Parma 2, Genoa 5
  • Saves: Parma goalkeeper made 4; Genoa's made none
  • Possession: Parma 42.2%, Genoa 57.8%

Parma's goalkeeper was busy — four saves on the night — and Genoa will feel they left this one on the field. Seventeen fouls from the home side slowed the game at key moments, and Parma's three offsides suggest they were living dangerously on the counter all night.

Both sides came into this match having lost their last two, so the three points mean more than a typical mid-table result. For Parma, it is a win that papers over some real defensive vulnerability. The question now is whether they can build on it, or whether Genoa's version of events — dominant on paper, empty-handed at full time — is the one that better predicts where each club is actually headed.
