Celta Vigo came into Sunday's home fixture at Balaidos without a win in their last five, and for most of the afternoon they looked like they'd finally broken that stretch. Ferran Jutglà put them ahead just before the break, the crowd had life, and Málaga — themselves no strangers to the draw column — seemed to be running out of answers. Then Adrián Niño arrived at the back post in the 83rd minute and headed everything level. Another point. Another afternoon that felt like something slightly less.

Our pre-match read had Celta Vigo as 57% favorites to win this one at home, and for long stretches that looked about right — but the football didn't cooperate at the end.

The Goal That Almost Held

The match found its shape early without much drama. A pair of yellow cards in the space of two minutes — Málaga's Einar Galilea in the 24th, Celta's Yoel Lago in the 26th — gave the game a bit of edge without fundamentally changing how either side played.

Celta were the ones making things happen going forward. Despite finishing the game with only 45.7% possession, they generated 17 shots to Málaga's 12, and they were the ones who found the net first. Hugo Gonzalez picked out Jutglà just before halftime, and the finish was enough to send Balaidos into the break with something to hold onto.

Málaga had the ball more — 54.3% over ninety minutes, 554 passes to Celta's 471, five corners to one — but they were disciplined rather than dangerous. Their two shots on target across the whole match tells you something about how cautiously they were set up. Celta's goalkeeper was barely tested, making just one save. Málaga's keeper, by contrast, made four.

El Niño de los Últimos Minutos

For seventy-plus minutes, Celta's defense held. Then Pablo Martínez delivered from wide and Adrián Niño met it with his head. One-one. Cabal, that was the moment any hope of three points evaporated.

The final numbers are a bit of a puzzle. Celta had the shots, Celta had the goal first, Celta were the home side — and yet they also ran six offsides to Málaga's zero, which speaks to a team pushing high and getting caught. Málaga were content to absorb, and when the right ball came late, they were clinical enough in the one moment that mattered.

Where It Leaves Both Sides

Two teams with no wins in their recent form, and both leave Balaidos with a point. Celta's record now reads five straight without a victory — three draws, two losses. Málaga's isn't much prettier: two draws, two losses, one draw in their last five.

Celta will feel the sting more here. They were the favorites, they were at home, they led for over forty minutes, and they couldn't protect it. The question now is whether this group can actually close out a game when they need to, or whether late equalizers become a habit. For Málaga, a point on the road is a point on the road — but this was a side that managed two shots on target all afternoon and still didn't lose. That's a kind of result in itself.
