There's a version of this derby where Real Madrid come to the Metropolitano and grind out a result. That version required eleven men. They had ten from the 52nd minute, and Atlético Madrid were never going to let that go to waste.

Our pre-match read had Real Madrid as the favorites at 48%, and for most of the first half that looked reasonable enough. Atlético were busy and physical — 19 fouls on the night — but Real Madrid were compact and disciplined, limiting the home side to little real danger. Marc Pubill picked up a yellow in the 35th minute, Cristian Romero followed three minutes later, and it looked like the kind of match that was going to be decided by one moment, one mistake.

That mistake came just after halftime.

The Red Card That Changed Everything

Denzel Dumfries had already been booked in the 49th minute when Dean Huijsen collected a straight red in the 52nd. Whatever Real Madrid's tactical plan had been, it was gone. Atlético smelled it immediately.

One minute later, the penalty. Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up and converted in the 53rd minute — cool, no drama. The Metropolitano, all 70,514 of them, exhaled and then roared.

Six minutes after that, it was two. Giuliano Simeone found Jonathan David in behind, and David finished with the kind of confidence you'd expect from a striker who has been doing exactly this all season. Two goals in six minutes, both coming directly from the numerical advantage Real Madrid had handed them. Cabal, that was the match as a contest right there.

Damage Control

To their credit, Real Madrid didn't fold entirely. They kept the ball — 39% of it, which is actually respectable with a man down — and Jude Bellingham tried to manufacture something before picking up a yellow in the 78th minute. Their goalkeeper was busy, making five saves against Atlético's nine on target.

The late goal came anyway. Antonio Rüdiger rose to meet a Bernardo Silva delivery and headed home in the 89th minute, but it was consolation, nothing more. Atlético had already done the work.

The final numbers tell the story of a team that controlled the match even before the red card: 61% possession, 18 shots, nine on target. Real Madrid managed eight shots total, three on target. El chispudo de David, always arriving at the right moment, was the decisive difference.

Atlético move to three wins in their last five, and will feel this derby result changes the early-season conversation about where the title race actually stands. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have now lost two of their last five — and the question now is whether the defensive mistakes that have crept into their game are a pattern or just a rough patch. Losing Huijsen to a red card in a match of this size isn't a small thing. They'll need answers before the next one comes around.
