Athletic Clubvs
ElcheAthletic Club dominated nearly every number on the night and still nearly lost. That's the frustrating truth of a 1-1 draw at San Mamés, where 66 percent possession, 19 shots, and seven corners produced almost nothing until Iñaki Williams finally made one count with eleven minutes to go.
Elche came to Bilbao sitting on a run of four results without a win and, by all appearances, content to make this match as ugly as possible. They got one shot on target. They won one corner. And for a long stretch of the first half, that was enough — because Athletic couldn't finish.
The Goal That Shouldn't Have Happened
The opener arrived in the 50th minute and it stung. A penalty, converted by Facundo Buonanotte, handed Elche a lead their possession numbers had done absolutely nothing to earn. Three shots, one on target, and they were ahead. Qué situación tan incómoda for a home side that had been knocking on the door for most of the evening.
Athletic pressed harder. Elche got yellowed — Federico Redondo in the 56th minute, Abiel Osorio in the 75th — and the visitors were starting to feel the pressure of holding a lead with ten men who'd already been booked. The atmosphere inside San Mamés was restless, the kind of quiet frustration that builds when a crowd can sense something slipping away.
Williams Levels It
The equalizer came in the 79th minute. Álex Berenguer found Iñaki Williams, and Williams did what Williams does — put it away. It was the one moment where Athletic's overwhelming territorial advantage finally translated into something on the scoreboard, and the relief inside the stadium was immediate.
Berenguer picked up a yellow card two minutes later, as did Beñat Gerenabarrena, both in the 81st minute — the kind of bookings that happen when a match starts to fray at the edges. Elche's Rubén Sánchez got one in the sixth minute of stoppage time, and Yuri Berchiche followed in the seventh, which tells you everything about how the final stretch felt.
Athletic finished with 613 passes at 90 percent accuracy. Elche had two saves all night. The gap in quality was obvious, and yet the scoreline was level.
Verdict
Our pre-match read had Athletic Club as clear favorites at 69 percent — and over 90 minutes they looked exactly that, just without the finishing to show for it. Three shots on target from 19 attempts is the number that will haunt the home side. You can dominate a match completely and still walk away with one point instead of three when the final product is that wasteful.
Elche will feel they've stolen something. They're still without a win in their last five, but a point at San Mamés with that little of the ball is the kind of result that keeps a struggling side breathing. Athletic, meanwhile, will need to sharpen up in front of goal — because performances like this don't stay unrewarded forever, but they don't guarantee results either.
